Cure Insomnia Bath Recipe

Insomnia is frustrating, can ruin our day, and even be debilitating when it occurs long term. We were created for regular, consistent sleep! Sleep keeps our bodies and our minds healthy.

This is a recipe that has worked for me on many a sleepless night! Taking a bath has proven to lead to a better, more healing sleep – this is one reason why we give our babies a nice warm bath at bedtime, in hopes of a better nights sleep for everyone.

It’s all about temperature adjustment and hormones. When our body temperature drops, it sends a signal to begin producing melatonin which relaxes our bodies and our minds! So when we get nice and toasty in a bath, it starts that temperature adjustment and relaxes us.

To further aid the relaxation and help me to sleep, I toss in about a cup of Epsom Salts and a cup of baking soda. The magnesium in the salts work as a gentle muscle relaxant.  And baking soda provides CO2 for your body to absorb, which promotes healthy cellular activity – which helps to encourage a good nights sleep by lowering stress hormones.

Then I add a few drops of lavender oil. This results in the most relaxing, beautiful smelling bath, and calms my mind. Lavender has been proven to promote sleep, reduce stress, calm muscles, and is even good for your skin! Another option if you aren’t a lavender fan is Chamomile. I’m allergic to it, so never use it personally, but it’s proven to have equal effects.

If you prefer not to use essential oils, I LOVE to use dried lavender (or you could try chamomile). It makes for a really beautiful bath – and while you’re at it make yourself a lovely cup of tea with them, it should also help you to relax and sleep.

When taking a bath for insomnia, be sure to create a total relaxing space. Pick up any clothes or towels from the floor, and declutter counters – a clean space is a restful space. Dim the lights, and light a few candles if you’d like. Make sure the candles are either 100% cotton wicks or wood wicks, and look for soy or beeswax candles. Remember that burning just any candle could be introducing added toxins to your bathroom, and will definitely not help you sleep better! I love these candles and highly recommend them – the Tranquil Oasis scent is actually a combination of lavender and chamomile. The crackle of the wood wicks is soothing for me, it sounds like I’m sitting next to a wood burning fireplace!

Don’t look at your phone during your bath, or watch tv. The point is to calm your mind, not stimulate it! Maybe play some soft music, or just close your eyes and meditate in total silence.
